What’s The Patch?

  • One email - practical programming that you can actually run on your game without chasing bandaid BS tips. Plus, access to tech and coaching you can only get here.

  • One podcast episode - a mix of candid conversations, interviews, live coaching and more.

Curious about how our top coach analyzes golf swings? In this week's video, Andrew and I explore how he examines swings and, more importantly, how he explains the necessary changes to everyday golfers like you.

Quick highlights:

  • How to film yourself correctly: down-the-line (DTL) and face-on (FO)

  • PPI: pivot, plane, impact. The three checks Andrew runs on every golfer

  • The lines and colors he draws every time, and why he never changes them

  • Why the P system is a communication tool, not a swing method

  • What a slicer looks like at P6 compared to a tour player

  • The big triangle and how long it should stay intact after impact

  • And much much more

The “P-System”

The P system is an organizational communication piece used between golf coach and student. That way there can be an easier transfer of knowledge and communication between student and coach, coach to coach, and as well bringing in family members. So everyone is on the same page.

It's very important to point out that though it is entitled the position system, the P system, it does not mean that we're coaching students position by position, nor is any position perfect. Positions are just a part of the golf swing. It's part of the motion that we pass through.

So simply put:

  • P1 is the starting position of the golf swing. It's where you're at at address.

  • P2 is early on in the takeaway when the shaft is parallel to the ground.

  • P3 is halfway into the backswing when the lead arm is parallel to the ground.

  • P4 is the top of the backswing.

  • P5 is back to halfway down into the downswing when the lead arm is parallel to the ground.

  • P6 is when the shaft is parallel to the ground just before impact.

  • P7 is impact.

  • P8 is post-impact when the shaft is parallel to the ground.

  • P9 is halfway into the follow-through when the trail arm is parallel to the ground.

  • P10 is the finish of the swing.

When you study these positions over time, you notice something. Great ball strikers and tour players have a lot of similarities across all of them.

So it's our job as a coach to use this identification system. We look at a golfer's swing and recognize what areas are outside of standard deviation for what an effective golf swing looks like.

From there, we can dial in on the positions they're passing through and crack the code. Find the one motion, the one pattern, that if we fix it, has the greatest outcome on their ability to improve and make their swing more efficient.
